It took all the self control in the world not to run in there and "liberate" some of the Acme memorabilia. While it's sad to see a 50's era store go, it's great that this location has done excellent business. And we're getting a new Acme from ground up.
Given your note about inventory being light in August (empty shelves and some items with little stock), I wonder if they simply got to a point where there wasn't enough to stay open until the original Sept. 19th date?
That is possible. Maybe too business dropped of so much after Labor Day with a spell of cold weather, maybe they decided to get started sooner. There'll be more money to make with a new store in the Spring than there will be with an old store in September!
Thanks for the great post, and glad to see that Beach Haven will return after other Jersey Shore Acmes have closed! Years ago during the Summer months Acme ran full-page newspaper "maps" depicting the Shore, showing the (at least a dozen) Acme locations and inviting "Visit Us When You Are Vacationing!" Might you, Bill Haines, or a reader have this gem stored away somewhere?
I unfortunately do not. Haven't ever seen one of those ads either. Did you happen to catch Acme's "From City to Shore" tagline this summer? It was used throughout the circulars and on store signage. I thought it was pretty brilliant. Very nice to see Acme get some customized tag lines that truly apply to them (even though there aren't nearly as many shore stores as there used to be).
Have you noticed how often ACME changes their tagline? They seem to go through them faster than SuperFresh goes through potential customers! I remember that there were at least three different taglines last year, compared to "your store for lower prices" many year run. However, it is nice to see ACME is getting all of this attention. Do you know the date or approximately when this new Beach Haven store will open?
No, all I've seen is "Spring 2015". They may be keeping the planned date under wraps since the weather between now and then has the potential to cause construction delays.
"getting better" is also customized for Acme. No other Albertsons chain is using it. I'm surprised they're not doing a similar thing with Shaw's since they fell on even harder times under SuperValu's leadership.
