Location: 1769 Lincoln Hwy, Edison, NJ
The other Edison Acme that I was having trouble tracking down until comments came in on Friday confirming the location. Our tour toady is courtesy of google maps. Not really worth a trip since there isn't a whole lot to see. This location opened November 4, 1959. The building is now home to Island Spa and Sauna and a portion of Cathay Bank. You can check out the dramatic interior of the spa by clicking here.
A few clues left along the back including the break room windows up on the second floor. They can be seen a little more clearly in the aerial photos below.

AERIAL VIEWS
Significant work being done to the shopping center when this image was taken. You can see in the google street views that both the facades and parking lot where dramatically improved.

Was this store remodeled during the 80's? Judging from the amount of cars around the Acme, there's a pretty good chance it was.

I could be wrong, but I vaguely remember seeing the red oval logo out front. I have no recollection of the decor.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in Edison in the 1960's about a mile from the Kilmer Plaza (as it was known) Acme. The decor was fairly '50's, with linoleum floors. I remember there was a Sav-On Drugs next door, a W.T. Grant's at the other end, and some other stores in between. There was also a Miles Shoes in a satellite building at other end of the parking lot, close to Rt. 27.
