News Break:
Pathmark Comeback?

Foodtown operator PSK Supermarkets is looking to acquire the Pathmark brand, logo and domain name. They have placed a bid of $1 million for the assets. Are they planning on resurrecting Pathmark? We'll have to wait and see. A few more details can be found at SupermarketNews.com by clicking here.

  1. PSK Foodtown just reopened a Pathmark on 145th St., and they operate another Super Foodtown in Bed Stuy Bklyn that was once a Pathmark.

  2. Holy Crap! People still want to buy the dead skeleteon that has been rotting for 10 years that is Pathmark?! I'm amazed.

    1. Pathmark was a very remembered name in the Tri-State, especially in the inner city, where they would tend to be the only large supermarket in the area. Plus, generations of New Yorkers still recall their ads with the Pathmark Guy, James Karen- they were flooded with complaints when he was in the final episode of Little House on the Prairie where he played an evil developer that tore down their town (thank god for that).

  4. That would be cool if Pathmark has a comeback. I think they would do great with Foodtown! :)

  5. Would be interesting if PSK left the Foodtown cooperative and operated as Pathmark. After all, Pathmark got its start after Supermarkets General parted ways with the ShopRite cooperative.

  6. I know some people have great memories of Pathmark but even before A&P bought them, Pathmark was struggling. I can't speak for the customers in NY, but in NJ pathmark has a bad stigma to the name. Pathmark prices were outrageous for a while now. I wish them luck, shocked anyone bid for it.

    1. I have to agree, Pathmarks in my area had the worst rep. Dirty, smelled like spoiled meat, understocked, were common complaints. The name had a tarnished inage so they will need a lot of luck to resusitate the name.

    2. Jake, I agree. But to me all A&P stores are dirty. I went to a Waldbaum's in NY a few months ago. The bathroom literally could've been out of a horror movie.

  7. The thing with Pathmark was that even though a lot of their stores were unkempt and dirty, they still had a following and they were always in areas where you could just run in and grab something and get out. That was the advantage, I think, they had over other stores when it came down to it. ShopRite didn't do a lot of business in neighborhoods, and A&P's prices were always high.

  9. The Pathmark that was in Berwyn PA was always pretty clean. It was a pretty nice store and they had some odd items nobody else carried. However, it has little traffic. And the prices were amazingly high. It is a shame to see a storied chain disappear. Maybe PSK can revive the name and the brand. A lot of people might have negative thoughts about Pathmark, but tons of people know the name!
