News Break:

Cerberus to buy Safeway!

Cerberus has offered $9.4 billion dollars for the country's second largest grocery store chain. If the deal goes through, Safeway and Alberstons will merge to become one company which will run approximately 2,400 stores under 17 different banners. There is still time for Safeway to consider other offers. Kroger has been rumored to be interested in Safeway as well. They recently beat out Cerberus for the Harris-Teeter chain. You can read more about the news at USAToday.com by clicking here. It's one of the better articles I have found about the impending deal.

  1. I wonder what will happen now with the lone Genuardi's store in Audubon. Maybe it will become an Acme?

  2. Albertson's says that all stores will remain open, but in Acme's case there are two Safeway's directly across the street from successful Acme's: Easton, MD and Foulk & Naamans Rd, Wilmington. Clearly some changes will be made. Will the Eastern Shore Safeway's become Acme's?

I believe that Safeway still has the leases on closed NJ Genuardi's in Barnegat, Egg Harbor Twp, Marlton, and Hightstown. Will any of these stores reopen as Acme's?

    1. Good point, I've been saying it since Genuardi's closed that Acme should have taken the Barnegat store over... there are so many retirement communities that relied on that store rather than driving to the ShopRites in Manahawkin & Waretown... its' not only convenient to get to, but the size of the store is perfect to navigate. I hope Acme will do it, now that they legally own it!

  3. Matt, I wonder about the Audubon Genuardi's as well. Another example of a possible conversion to ACME is the Safeway in Glasgow, DE. The ACME name is much stronger in New Castle County, and there's no overlapping ACME store in close proximity.

    1. I take that back. ACME has a store very close to Glasgow. No idea how I forgot about that one!

    2. The Bear DE and Elkton MD Acmes are nearby, the Glasgow Safeway is about in the middle. Probably still enough distance to rebanner the store and still be successful. Elkton lost a lot of it's fire when the Walmart went supercenter. Redner's also came to town. The once thriving Food Lion is a shell of what it used to be. I always thought it should have been rebannered as a Bottom Dollar, but then Food Lion went and pulled the Bottom Dollar name out of their Food Lion territories.

There is also a ShopRite not too far from the Safeway as well. The largest in the state. It originally opened as a Super Fresh, then closed, then later reopened as a Pathmark after the merger. The Pathmark didn't last long. ShopRite came in and knocked out the side wall and expanded the footprint of the store. Which is a questionable move, since the two previous tenants were not successful in that location.

I do not know the sales figures for these stores, and I don't visit the Glasgow location enough to fancy a guess. But the Safeway-turned-ShopRite in Bear is a huge success, and no doubt has knocked the Giant (former Super G) across the street down a few pegs. Giant poured a ton of money into the location to remodel not that long ago. I think while the Safeway was still around. The Safeway was small and crowded, ShopRite added to the side of the building and is a lot more open.

  4. Acme's Prices are MUCH lower than before when that crappy superValu was running the show. I am traveling 40 minutes weekly to shop at the nearest ACME as i save a whopping $70 every time i shop! Cerberus has not eliminated double coupons which i expected that they would! All in all this merger is only going to bring prices even lower and create a powerhouse grocery network spanning from New England to Alaska to Hawaii ultimately making ACME and Albertsons more competitive against Walmart and kroger! sounds GREAT to me!

  5. Somebody has to come in and run Safeway better than it has been running itself.

Genuardi's was a hugely successful chain with a lot of loyal customers that Safeway took over and applied their look to all the locations.

No surprise that the Genuardi's chain is now dismantled.

First thing someone needs to do is come in and lower prices. And then get rid of those damn endcaps.

Dover DE also has an Acme and a Safeway, but the Acme is up by the racetrack and the Safeway is further down by the Target. Then you've got the area bookended by Walmart Supercenters in Camden and Cheswold.
