Check THIS out...

Early Version of the
Checkerboard Arch Décor
Alive and Well Today!

Location: Hannaford, 7 Medway Rd, Milford, MA

A hot tip came into Acme Style from James about some pictures seen over on yelp for the Hannaford store in Milford. The store has an early version of the Checkerboard Arch décor, minus the checkerboards. It must have started it's life as a Star Market or Shaws. The builing is nearly identical, both inside and out, to Acme's 90's models. I'm not sure if any Shaws were built with this model but I do know some Star Market stores were. Acme never used the Checkerboard Arch décor in any of their new stores. It was used only for remodels.

Unlike the Checkerboard Arch décor that we're familiar with, this package uses a variety of fonts for the department signage.

This flooring never officially made it's way into Acme. Remodeled stores kept their 80's checkerboard flooring which was still relatively new when this décor package was rolled out. The only Acme I know of that had this flooring was the old Beach Haven store.

Additional photos are available on the yelp review for this store. To view them, please click here.

A satellite view of the exterior which clearly shows the similarities to Acme's 90's stores. The store is set back too far from the main road to catch any good views from google street view.

  1. Kiss it goodbye!!! It's going to become a Big Y World Class Market thanks to the merger!!

  2. Big Y are the most boring supermarkets in the NE. They're based out of Springfield Mass.

  3. If you didn't say otherwise I would swear that's a 90's Acme!

  4. I've gotta say, the different fonts make it look far more modern- if I didn't know better, I'd say that this package was from the early 2000s. Hannaford did an excellent job of maintaining that location.

  5. Maybe it originally had the checkerboard pattern and it was painted over?

  6. I'd suspect that at least some of the lettering was done by Hannaford at some point (the Deli and Fresh Catch at least) as they look familiar to one of the Hannaford styles from a few years back.

    1. Just to add - check out this photo on the Hannaford Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10154430971029561&set=a.10150266671179561.345137.542304560&type=3

      Same letters, different backdrop.

    2. I was thinking the same things as you and Andrew 7239 in the comment above yours: looks to me like Hannaford just did a slight refresh of this décor rather than using it outright or replacing it altogether. Either way, cool find, James and Acme Style!

  7. That font is definitely a Hannaford standard also found in a newer Hannaford in Pawling NY

    1. That also I believe still is in Highland, NY (like Pawling ex-Grand Union) and was in Delmar, NY until a renovation a few years back.

This look in Milford may be very short for the world: Hannaford's last day is September 6th and Big Y's will be September 10th.

  8. I don't know why but the whole decor package just reeks of 1980s ShopRite to me. I've seen a lot of similar stuff in ShopRite stores that didn't immediately remodel to a more modern look.

  9. Wow, I screwed up. I meant Milford, which is this store! Yeah, Big Y put their decor in but left a lot of this stuff behind.
