ACME ROLLLING IN!

Some pictures sent in over the weekend by Charles of the Park Ridge store. As you can see. this store has the 3rd version of A&P "fresh" remodel. While the remodel was visually stunning, the layout could not have been more confusing and impractical. I would bet these stores will be among the first that Acme will do full remodels to once the dust settles from the acquisition. At the very least, they'll return the store to traditional supermarket aisles rather than having everyone split up into tiny departments like it is now.
Bye bye self-checkouts.

Update: According to Acme's Facebook page, this store is now open. They do not have it listed on their official "store openings" page on their blog.
I was in the store on Saturday. Florescent lighting is being added to the entire store. They were about 90% complete and had signs informing customers that it was still a work in progress and would be complete Monday (today).
ReplyDeleteIt does sound pretty intriguing to have mini "departments" laid out like a department store rather than the traditional aisles. Of course, I'm sure that it worked way better on paper than reality, and all that would've been worse if the store was crowded.
ReplyDeleteIt works in some stores, Bed Bath & Beyond for example, but it's not practical in the type of store that would regularly have high volume times. Even Toys R Us tried it about 15 years ago, but have since gone back to straight aisles around a racetrack.
DeleteI wonder why the Centennial roof extends to the building to the right? I doubt that was ever the A&P. The building all the way to the right looks like it could have been a grocery store at one point (exposed columns on the side... Acme?) but would the shopping center, being so small, have eve had two grocery stores?
ReplyDeleteI can't say about the roof, but the store all the way to the right use to be a hardware store. It was a Builders Emporium, then a Channel Home Center and finally a Rickel Home Center when the two merged. It is now a Staples. Next to where you see the columns was part of the outside area and an enclosed shed building for the hardware store.

DeleteI was in this store today and it got new white ceiling tiles to go with the new lighting that was added. The store is so bright now. The layout remains the same. Unfortunately there weren't too many shoppers for a Saturday afternoon especially before Thanksgiving.
