Former Acme – Woodbridge Ave, Edison, NJ

Location: 2303 Woodbridge Avenue, Edison, NJ

Continuing with coverage of the former Acmes of Edison. This store on Woodbridge Avenue was Edison's only pitched-roof store. The location opened September 18, 1963. Closing date unknown but it appears to have survived through 1987.

The pitched-roof building extends past the awning for the neighboring strip of stores. This section could have been easily walled off and made into a separate store if Family Dollar hadn't extended all the way over.

Heading around back with no scars along this side of the store. All delivery doors appear to have been along the opposite side.

This store was so small, the second floor housed the compressor room only. You can see scars for the break room along the first floor.

Judging from the aerial photos, this flat-roof section was here during the Acme days. It can be seen as far back as 1979.

Several spots in the store with missing tiles and yes, I could see the pitched-roof! I figured it wouldn't show up in pictures but I gave it a shot anyway.

The second floor to the rear of the store can be seen inside!

Support beams for the second floor which you wouldn't have seen in the Acme. This would have all been back room space.

No other Acme clues to be found in the rest of the store.

Acme's lights are still in the parking lot!

Only a few historic views since the quality of the other available years is absolutely terrible.

Former Acme – Route 27, Edison, New Jerey

Location: 1769 Lincoln Hwy, Edison, NJ

The other Edison Acme that I was having trouble tracking down until comments came in on Friday confirming the location. Our tour toady is courtesy of google maps. Not really worth a trip since there isn't a whole lot to see. This location opened November 4, 1959. The building is now home to Island Spa and Sauna and a portion of Cathay Bank. You can check out the dramatic interior of the spa by clicking here

A few clues left along the back including the break room windows up on the second floor. They can be seen a little more clearly in the aerial photos below.

Significant work being done to the shopping center when this image was taken. You can see in the google street views that both the facades and parking lot where dramatically improved.

Was this store remodeled during the 80's? Judging from the amount of cars around the Acme, there's a pretty good chance it was.

Former Acme – Amboy Avenue, Edison, New Jersey

Location: 1199 Amboy Ave, Edison, NJ 08837

Not much to see here anymore. The entire building has been resurfaced so there are no Acme scars to see, even along the back. Exact opening date unknown but the store was open by 1957.

Update 2.11.17: Opening day was June 18, 1957. Acme considered this store to be in Metuchen while Walgreens address is Edison.

Former A&P to the rear with the former Acme in the foreground. There are no crossovers between the two parking lots.

While the current building offers us no Acme clues, the satellite photos sure do! You can clearly see the script logo along the awning in the above photo. Surprising the sign remained until 1987. The store was probably in its final days at this point.

Edison had two other Acmes. A small pitched-roof store was located on Woodbridge Avenue and will be covered on the blog next week. A third location was along Route 27 but the exact location is unknown.

Update: The Route 27 location has been confirmed in the comments. I will be wrapping up coverage of the remaining former Acmes in Edison on Tuesday.
