Brand New Acme – Sea Isle City, New Jersey

It's finally here! The tour of the brand-new Sea Isle City store!! Photos have been kindly sent in by two of our regular contributors. Sent in the very same week no less! Both report the store was insanely busy on their visits with the parking lot being an absolute nightmare.

The exterior of the store is very similar to the replacement store in Beach Haven.

I'll take some! Haven't been to this part of the shore since I was a kid.


You'll have better luck riding your bike here than driving.




Elevated entrance like in Beach Haven. The whole store is elevated to avoid flooding when the sea rolls over this part of the island.




The "ACME" on the cart handles is apparently very easy to scratch off. I just noticed today that half the carts at my local Acme no longer have the logo.

While this place is around 3 times larger than the store it replaced, it's still relatively small.

Corner Deli sign is squeezed in back here. Bumps right up to the Bakery wall. Snazzy flat screens along the back wall!

Very small Bakery tucked in the corner. Have to say... I HATE Acme's roll and bagel bins. So unappealing. They've been around for years and I'm really surprised they haven't switched to more appetizing display cases for these new stores.


The Meat Department wall is brown here instead the gray color we've been seeing in the converted stores.


The last aisle is CLASSIC Acme. Frozen and Dairy with a tiny Customer Service counter in the front corner. The store has a decent width to fit 14 aisles but, as Doug noted, the aisles are pretty short.

I think my 50's Acme had a bigger Customer Service desk!


The registers are angled. A total of only seven must make for some long lines, especially on the weekends.

Status of Sea Isle City Acme...

Acme is in a race against time to get the new Sea Isle City store open by Memorial Day Weekend. The Sea Isle City Guide reports that construction has been going on around the clock to make the deadline. Rapid progress is also underway to the interior. The registers were installed about two weeks ago. We can see in the photo above that the exterior is looking great! Way more personality here than the bland facade at the new Beach Haven store. Sea Isle City Acme to be replaced?

An anonymous comment came in this morning saying the Sea Isle City Acme will be torn down this fall and replaced with a larger store. After a quick Google search, I did find an article on SeaIsleCityGuide.com that mentions the plans to replace this classic store. Here's an excerpt...

It looks like the Sea Isle Acme which may the smallest supermarket in the world, is going to be torn down after the summer of 2015 and replaced with a new larger Acme. Several Acme employees have said that the new store will run the full length of the shopping center and be raise several feet in order to comply with building codes and avoid flooding. The others stores in the shopping center may be relocated to the side of the current parking lot behind the CVS.

No official word to be found at this time but I'll keep my eyes pealed for some. I would think Acme would be advertising the news like they did with the Beach Haven store last summer if this plan was a sure thing. To view coverage of one of Acme's oldest stores, please click here.

Sea Isle City Acme — Open For Business!

So here are the pictures of the Sea Isle City store that Michael had sent in a while back. While prepping the Beach Haven pictures he just sent in, I discovered that I had lost these pictures. He resent them today! This store reopened on March 22, the same day a Sea Isle City. And like Sea Isle City, Beach Haven looks pretty much the same as it did before the storm. Michael reports that $3 million dollars was spent repairing this store. None of that money used for new decor. The department names are now painted blue but that appears to have been done prior to the storm. You can jump over to pictures of the store being cleared out by clicking here. The letters were all brown for our first visit back in 2010.

If you scroll back up to the shot of the front of the store, you'll see that they added the red apples in the window above the entrance.


The very original Meat and Deli signs are STILL in place!  Produce and Frozen Food signage is from the Checkerboard Arch Decor era.




Unusual aisle markers. They look a bit homemade and are still too large for this low ceiling store.

Sea Isle City Update!

No pictures to share yet but we do have word on the look of the store... it's pretty much unchanged according to this comment left on the original post.

With The SIC Acme officially open, I decided to take a look and.... No décor changes!!!! everything just got a fresh coat of Paint!! 
70's Corner Deli - Up!! just pained blue (looks like the 30th coat of paint if you look up close)
70's Lancaster Brand is still along the back and is painted blue
80's - 90's produce alcove signage is still up and also painted blue. There are also pictures along the walls of local sea isle similar to the Neighborhood Market décor. and lastly, they took down the Albertsons Marketplace aisle markers an replaced them with ugly black and white aisle markers which have no relation to acme whatsoever. Also, I think parts of the tile were even saved but I'm
not sure.

Hard to know if the department signage was painted blue before or after Sandy. Work is being done at the store when the picture below was taken in early December but it looks more like clearing out and drying out. Nice to know the last "Corner Deli" in the Acme chain will continue on!


Anonymous mentions that the Albertston Marketplace aisle markers have been replaced with the black and white Premium Fresh and Healthy markers. Below are the former aisle markers...


Replaced with aisle markers similar to the ones below. Both rounds of markers may have been taken out of stores that closed.


If pictures don't arrive sooner, I will be visiting both Sea Isle and Beach Haven in the early summer.

Update: "Anonymous" left a new comment saying that the new aisle markers in the Sea Isle City store are NOT the Premium Fresh and Health signs seen above.

Updated photos of storm-damaged Acmes

Thank to Michael L. for sending in more photos and news about the Sea Isle City and Beach Haven Acmes...

Sea Isle is in a slow process of drying and rebuilding. However blocked storm drains keep its entrance, and interior, precariously close to flood stage. Beach Haven is awaiting demolition. Acme recently purchased the surrounding land and will build a 30,000 sq ft plus store that is hoping for a May 2013 grand opening. It will have to follow a fast timetable as there has been little accomplished at the Beach Haven store, other than its gutting. There is no other supermarket on Long Beach Island and there are only a few small convenience stores currently open. 2 CVS stores in Ship Bottom might be serving as the community's one-stop center. All Wawas are closed, including 7/11. The area around the Acme in Haven Beach and Beach Haven is devastated. Very few businesses have returned. There is so much more trash to be picked up. Photos were taken December 9.

Just noticed the best pic of the bunch didn't get uploaded the first time around...


We've seen it before but it's always great to see it again... the original "Corner Deli" sign still up on the wall! "Lancaster Brand Meats" remains as well and can be seen ever so slightly in this photo. The other departments have the lettering from the Checkerboard Arch package as can be seen here and here. The floor also appears to be from the CA package, although it wasn't used in other Acmes but rather brought over from Acme's cousin, Star Markets. The overall color scheme of the store is from the Albertson's Marketplace decor, as are the (former?) way-to-big-for-this-store aisle markers.
