Zooming in on the Newark DE pic... do I see '90s Pathmark decor inside? Will be very curious to see an Acme with that look.
I'm also still curious to see what Acme does to the stores with the A&P-modified "Path to Savings" package. Seems like they'd have to do a lot to cover or replace all of the "Pathmark save" signage.
Havertown, Gladwyne, and Wynnewood (all former SF) are all set to open as ACME on the 20th. Today is the last day for Gladwyne and Wynnewood as SuperFreshes, and Havertown closed over the weekend. I guess they must be doing a little more work over there.
I heard a rumor Acme is looking to buy more stores due to being happy with the stores they bought. I can't confirm or deny this rumor. Anyone hear anything?

It was far enough from the Mansfield ShopRite (which is a pretty crappy store) and Weis to be convenient, but wasn't that big. Everybody wanted to see it remain open.
Yep- they didn't take a store in Washington wither, although that might've been because that A&P unsuccessfully tried to stop ShopRite from opening a huge store up Route 31 from them.
They just removed the yellow foamboard with the "happy to help you save" on it, revealing the old "Path to" department markers and then remove the "Path to" letters and replace them with an Acme sticker. So "Path to Fresh Baked" becomes "Acme Fresh Baked", etc. The blue strips with the Pathmark Sav-A-Center logo & "Save" strips that ran around the perimeter, as well as the words they covered up from the previous (Pathmark2000) decor are also removed and the walls are spackled and painted.
Thanks for the info. Seems like this might be a bit of an improvement from having "save" plastered everywhere, but these stores (along with any Pathmarks with '90s decor) should still be the first A&P acquisitions to get remodeled.
I think it looks great with the Acme up there. While it has become dated, I always liked the purple and blue pastel color scheme because Pathmark never really had department signage that was very nice before that. The bright pastels were part of the Pathmark2000 concept (or as I call it, The Golden Girls remodel), which was a brainchild of Pathmark VP, and later CEO, Eileen Scott, who worked her way up from a cashier. The stores were markedly improved and made more customer-friendly due to this upgrade in the 90's. On a side note, when bankruptcy was imminent, a few rogue Pathmarks just ripped their "Happy to help you save" signs down...as I guess they wanted to forget they ever heard of A&P. or a Sav-A-Center. I know the Elizabeth/Elmora store (an original Pathmark) has all their original "Path To" signs again.
I drove by the new Manahawkin Acme on the way home from Atlantic City tonight. I couldn't go inside because it was closed for the night. Their sign is the opposite of Montclair. The ACME letters are huge on the facade and look quite striking. They also have both street signs done, both on Bay Ave and Mill Creek Rd.
It made me wonder why Acme even bought this location, as I have mentioned before. It is very old, and the adjoining plaza has many vacant stores. Superfresh was never busy. Manahawkin already has a Shoprite, BJ's, Costco, Walmart, Kmart, and Target. But they're all on the other side of town. But this new Acme is the only major store on the eastern part of town. It's also the closest supermarket now to much of LBI because the new Acme is far down towards Beach Haven. Perhaps Acme is trying to attract more business from nearby residents who normally ignored the Superfresh and drove farther to reach the other stores.
Doug, I think you answered your own question! Acme probably wanted the Manahawkin location because of the fact that it has little competition.
Also, the company is being very aggressive along the Jersey shore, pretty much dominating the entire thing. Except for some ShopRites and a few Foodtowns and Trader Joes, Acme is everywhere. The Red Bank area has five stores- Lincroft, Fair Haven, Little Silver and two across the street from each other in Shrewsbury and Tinton Falls. In the area you mention, Acme has Beach Haven, Tuckerton and Manahawkin, and will have Barnegat next spring. On the southern peninsula, there are stores in Cape May, Cape May Court House (two of 'em), Wildwood and North Wildwood, not to mention a new one coming to Sea Isle City.
Seems the Acme strategy is to leave no room for competition, and that strikes me as a wise move.
I have family who have a summer house in Manahawkin for the last 7 years and have said the SR is a total disaster zone during the summer with a combo of locals and beachgoers since its right on 72 going onto the island. Maybe by opening now after the summer, ACME will attract the locals who live nearby who wont have to drive to SR and by the summer it will be better established which may revitalize the plaza it is in.
The former Superfresh in the Crossroads Plaza in Richboro, PA is now open as an Acme. Drove by today while making a supply run at work. Small Acme sign, probably due to new township regulations.

ReplyDeleteI'm just hoping they buy the ex-A&P in Belvidere- people didn't want to see it go. It was successful enough to get the Fresh remodel (V2).
