  1. I'm interested to know what Albertsons is going to do with the Safeway that is already in Rehoboth. That Safeway was built new in the mid to late-2000s I believe. The Safeway and the SuperFresh now Acme are far enough away from each other that it shouldn't impact store sales. It would make sense for Albertsons to keep both stores if they can. Acme is familiar to PA and DE residents going down to the beach and Safeway is familiar to Washington/Baltimore residents. The SuperFresh now Acme has a really nice interior based on pictures posted either here or on Flickr. The Safeway has the standard Lifestyle interior. Other than Acme and Safeway there is a Food Lion, Giant-MD (started as a Super G) and a non-super Wal-Mart.

  2. I think that Abertsons planning on keeping both chains open. In northern Wilmington, they operate an Acme directly across the street from a Safeway. And they are remodeling the Acme.

  3. Seeing a couple of complaints on the Acme new store opening blog about the removal of the self-service checkouts. I know Albertson’s said they were removing them to increase customer engagement but it seems short-sighted if they don’t properly staff the checkout lanes and end up alienating customers in the process.

I always find self-checkouts more convenient and make me more likely to return to a store. Forcing me to stand in line and chit chat with the cashier doesn’t help me out.

    1. The problem with self checkouts is that they tend to be more trouble than they're worth at times. Some of it has to do with the customers themselves, especially the ones that use them for big orders, but a lot of it has to do with the stores themselves. I've said numerous times that Pathmark's were the absolute worst, stacked one on top of the other, prone to glitching out, and various other issues. Acme's weren't much better, as they could be slow, but at least they were properly staffed.

I don't know of any ShopRite stores employing the self checkout but Stop & Shop is huge on them.

    2. The ShopRite in Hillsborough has self-checkouts. They have both styles... the small kiosk type and at least one with a belt. They're located at the far end by the pharmacy and are not used by many costumers. That's the only ShopRite I know of off the top of my head that has them.

The self-checkouts in the Edgewater and Weehawken stores moved customers through much faster than the single express lane Acme has in each store. Sometimes the express registers aren't even open!

    3. Most of the Shoprite's I've been to (PA and DE) have them...typical newer NCR units with the scale not belt.

    4. I know the Kingston (NY) ShopRite has (or at least had) a couple, but they were kind of stuck in along a wall and not terribly easy to use. Otherwise, the ShopRite stores further up (Hudson and the newer Albany area ones) do not have any.

  4. Which ones are left? I know there's the two Pathmarks in Delaware, three Superfresh's around mainline Philly and I think another Pathmark in PA. Any more?

  5. The former SuperFresh in Richboro (sometimes also referred to as Southampton due to it straddling a border of towns), PA (800 Bustleton Pike) also reopened this week.

  6. From what I'd researched, Havertown PA reopens on Wednesday, Gladwynne and Wynnewood PA reopen on Friday. I'm assuming the two Delaware Pathmarks should reopen by tomorrow or Tuesday if they're not already open. Don't know about the rest.
