ACME OUT! GIANT IN!
Location: 8600 Ridge Ave, Philadelphia PA
Surprising scenario here. ACME shuttered its long-operating Andorra store back in 2024. They cited the reason being a large increase in rent as their previous agreement, which was grandfathered in with a changing of ownershup of the center, was due to expire. Giant jumped in the spot with a large addition, creating a store of 50,000 square feet in the same spot as the 22,000 square foot ACME. Was ACME asleep at the wheel? Why did they just give up? You can see some photos of the impressive new GIANT by clicking here. You can check out articles about Giant's opening here and here. The new store opened on
June 19, 2026.
Here's an old aerial shot showing the potential for a much larger store to be built in the location of the ACME. I'm assuming the smaller stores south of the ACME building vacated, allowing Giant to expand into that area. The new Giant also has a second floor, which helped facilitate the huge increase in sales floor space.

I was distraught by this closure. I'd heard they were actually planning a remodel here so it sounds like they didn't want to give up. Giant also completely demolished everything between the gym and the 5 Below, which I was surprised by. I thought they would've tried to make the existing building work and just expand it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for confirming! Still no photographic evidence online of exactly what Giant did to the previous structures.
