The location where the late-90's fortress Acme in Morrisville is located is being redeveloped (finally after plans have failed). Wawa still plans to build a store on the site; along with Rite Aid moving from Giant Plaza to the Acme Plaza. Albertsons still has some blood in the company out there!
I remember a few years ago somebody (either here or on Flickr, can't remember which) gave a link to an old website filled with ACME pictures from 2002-03. Does anybody remember it or have a link? It had a lot of older stores pictured before they were closed by Albertsons.
You should try looking that website on the way back machine website. it’s a digital archive of the World Wide Web and other information on the Internet. They have websites from all the way back from the early 90s til now, I actually found bardlees before they went out of business
That must've been before my time... but Mike is right... web.archive.org. Largest database of Acme history right there... type in any website and BAM... right there. Although I don't know the site you're referencing, if you put in AcmeMarkets.com you get a whole list of Acme stores from 199(8?) to today. Really great source... I find a lot of A&P information from there, too.

I'd probably estimate around a half... most of the New York stores haven't been remodeled yet, and that's nearly a third, plus a lot of locations in Jersey suburbs like Jefferson and Montclair.
I think Acme might be coming up with an alternative decor replacement for the remaining stores... it will be interesting to see what happens; but once again, Weis bought (I'm pretty sure) 20-30 Food Lion locations in Maryland, and none of them have been updated. They've had them longer than Acme.
I was going to guess a little under 3/4. Most of the Philly area stores have been redone (I think Society Hill and Gladwyne are the only exceptions), as have 3 of the 4 CT stores.
Was inside the Shoprite at Island Avenue, and those looking for the preserved Industrial Circus interior are out of luck now. (Noticed the pics on that store post have disappeared.) Shoprite has completely rebuilt the store inside and out....
I used to drive by that store on a nearly daily basis, and it sure looked like a massive overhaul was underway. I've never stopped in, though, as it was always at night and that's not a good neighborhood.

ReplyDeleteThe site was taken down a few years ago. It was used for internal purposes at a signage company who worked with Acme for a short time.

ReplyDeleteTough to track since Acme isn't holding grand reopenings at most remodeled/updated locations. A huge mistake as far as I'm concerned.
