Here comes another NEW Acme!

Genuardi's - Barnegat, NJ

Location: 912 West Bay Ave, Barnegat, NJ

According to officials in Barnegat, New Jersey, Acme is officially moving into the abandoned Genuardi's! The breaking news was reported last night on AsburyParkPress, com. Thanks to Dave W. for letting us know. Acme will not confirm the news at this time but the store is expected to open in early 2016. For more details, please click here

  1. Is it possible that Albertsons/Safeway still was paying the lease on this store?

    1. Safeway still had control of the building, not sure if they are paying a lease or actually own it outright. I found this listing for the store on Safeway Realty: http://safewayrealtyholdings.listinglab.com/3041BarnegatTownshipNJ/index.cfm

  2. This new Albertsons is really turning out to be a miracle! There are a couple other vacant Genuardis locations, which makes me wonder...

    1. Several of the Genuardi's remaining vacant are either too small or too close to an existing Acme, or both.

    2. Too close makes sense, but too small? Doesn't Acme still have some fairly small stores of it's own?

    3. Nevermind some of those locations they're (intending on) buying from A&P. Some of them seem tiny.

  3. Cool!

They should take over the old Super Fresh in Hammonton, NJ.

  4. This is a great store in a great location, at least five miles from the closest Shop Rite. All the fixtures are still in place, so it won't be a big job to get the store open. I'm guessing that Safeway still holds the lease, which will certainly make the transfer easy. Great News!

  5. I wonder if they will rebuild the facade with this and the A&P/Acme stores.

    1. I doubt they are going to change much with the building besides some minor interior tweaks...it really isn't that old and there is nothing wrong with how it looks. I would imagine some of the ratty looking A&P/Pathmark locations will be remodeled over time.

(I do wonder if Genuardi's would have stuck around a few more years if the majority of their stores would have become ACME).

    2. Interior remodels are probably more pressing. If/when they get around to it they'll redo the exteriors if they're otherwise in decent shape.

  6. They probably aren't going to touch the facades for a while. Probably what will happen is the most pressing interior remodels, then focus on everything else later. The Dominick's acquisitions changed very little on the store outsides.

  8. The exterior ACME sign is now up on the facade of this future location. The lights are on in the interior, but the shelves are still empty. I would have taken pics, but it was already dark when I drove by yesterday evening. I can't wait until Barnegat opens, where an American Stores was once located back in the day.
