FORMER PATHMARK & KMART
Location: 3010 Route 35, Hazlet, NJ
Jumping back in time to the abandoned Pathmark and Kmart in Hazlet, New Jersey. A pairing of two great stores never to be seen again. When I was here photographing the stores, renderings of the remodeled shopping center were posted around the parking lot and had the place looking incredible. The finished results look nothing like the plans indicated. In fact, all the center wound up with is an Aldi, Burlington and Planet Fitness with none of the design elements seen on the renderings.
To this day, Pathmark's self-checkouts, along with the checkout's interface, were among the best ever designed.
Unbelievably, the former stores are still pictured as open on google maps!

Did the world need another Burlington? How is this store popping up literally everywhere? On Route 3 in Clifton, there are two located directly across the highway from one another. I do not understand the appeal. To jump back to the original coverage of these stores, click here.
