Cerberus, who owns Albertsons/Safeway may step in and buy some of the Rite Aid stores that Walgreens will have to divest in order for their merger to go through. There are questions whether or not Fred's can take on that many stores (effectively doubling their size).
Also, 99 Ranch, a primarily West Coast chain has opened a store in Edison NJ at what was a Pathmark. They plan to open more stores in NJ. They lean more Chinese, compared to H Mart who leans Korean.
What exactly would they do with them? Convert them into grocery stores?
We've got two Rite Aids where I live, both within short drives of a Walgreens (one is literally two blocks away). I can't imagine either staying open in that case.
Seems the original thought was that they'd buy the stores to take the pharmacy and put it into existing stores nearby, which was not going to be allowed. Then the thought turned to reopening freestanding pharmacies, using either Sav-On or Osco names that they have in the stores already.
No idea what will actually happen, but Walgreens did allow that they would sell off more stores (up to 1,200 rather than the 900 range they targeted originally) and Fred's also said that they were still willing to buy them (as that was in the original agreement, that if more stores were sold they would take those as well). Perhaps the two could somehow work together (Cerberus being a investing company anyhow providing the funding [since that was what seemed to be an issue] and Fred's providing the operating part?).
Apparently, ACME had a second distribution center in the Brewerytown section of Philadelphia, that was open until 1993. It has recently been divided into Apartments: http://www.philly.com/philly/business/real_estate/residential/20160814_New_entry_in_Brewerytown_s_revitalization_quickly_draws_renters.html
Also relating to their distribution centers, anybody know what the deal is with the script logo sign on their main building? It's been down since at least August. Are they going to put it back up at any point?
Any truth to the rumors tbat Price Chopper was sold. I heard something today but can't confirm its true. I know Albertsons pulled out of the offer to buy.
Haven't seen anything (and one would think it would be reported locally, being that the HQ is in Schenectady) yet.
Also, there are a couple other Price Chopper chains (one in the Kansas area, and apparently one in Canada as well), so something being reported without detail could be about any of those?
Albertsons had apparently been in negotiations with PC but dropped. It wasn't supposed to be public, but it was leaked--both skirted around the issue, and only Kansas City's PC flatly denied it. PC is trying to sell its stores then lease them back.
The Stop & Shop in Waldwick, NJ is closing on March 2nd. It's one of their smallest stores in the state with only 10 ails. This was a previous Grand Union and kept the GU decor to the end as S&S did little to no updates since taking this location over. This closing will hopefully help the Allendale Acme which is only about 2 miles away
I grew up in Waldwick, and remember that store from the Grand Union days. My dad liked shopping there because it is in walking distance. Also there was once a Pathmark at Prospect and Franklin Turnpike (Shoprite??) that everyone remembered was dirty and gross lol. The store later became Genovese Drugs (anyone remember them) Later becoming Eckerd, and now Rite Aid....
I think most Pathmarks in North Jersey probably fit the "gross" description lol. Mine certainly did.
ShopRite too had its fair share of grody stores. The Passaic store was gross before their 2000 remodel, the Little Falls store was so bad it had holes in the floor. And then there was the old Brookdale ShopRite, where all the perishables were piled on one side of the front end and the store was dingy as all hell.
Come to think of it, there were more than a few sketchy A&P stores too.
What's the deal with the SavOn branding? It seems like it isn't used at all in the former A&P/New Acme stores, but older stores that have been remodeled are still keeping the branding?
I don't think the Allendale Acme needs to worry that much. They're the only game in their area and will do just fine. The Waldwick Stop & Shop couldn't have been cutting into their business that much anyway, and those people who shopped there have the Super Stop & Shop not too far away in Ridgewood to use.
The Shoprite (ex Acme) of Island Avenue (Philadelphia) is starting what I'm assuming will be a major remodel. If anyone wants to see the Acme's leftover IC decor, now is the chance!
Uncle Giuseppe's opened in Ramsey replacing the old Pathmark in November and they carry the Essential Everyday line...Uncle G's is a great store but it's not for regular grocery shopping as there prices are quite high.
Random question- Does anyone know what the oldest ACME store in operation is currently? I know it was Narberth (1953) back before they picked up the A&P stores, but I think A&P still has a couple 40's stores going until the end.
Chester Springs has finally started their remodel. They axed the bank, and are building something else in its place. Self checkouts are gone, replaced with Customer service. The old CS counter has also been removed. It looks like they are building new bathrooms in back, so the ones in front are presumably on their way out.
Any chance for the Supremo which was a former acme.

Cerberus buying any stores is a rumor, it's looking unlikely that they will go through the merge at this point.
DeleteLol, I think Acme should take the stores... or maybe Jewel Osco out here?

To chris p's point, it would be weird for the rite aids to stay open because Walgreens recently bought rite aid
DeleteAny news on the Penn "Fresh Grocer" space? Is ACME confirmed?
ReplyDeleteWas by the Cottman Avenue store a few weeks ago, noticed Liquor License signs up....
