Barnegat Acme Opening Soon!

Location: 912 West Bay Avenue, Barnegat, NJ

Photos have been sent in giving us a sneak peek at the new Barnegat Acme. Genuardis closed this location back in December 2012 and the building has sat empty ever since. News broke in August that Acme would be taking over the location although the company would not confirm their plans at the time. Well there's no denying it now! The signs are up and the inside in being remodeled...

The Quality Built decor package is up on the walls...

White Produce cases which would be s switch from the usual black cases that have been going into remodeled stores.

The store, which will be Baregat only supermarket, is due to open in early February.

  1. Thanks for posting! It was cool seeing the pictures closer up onto the glass. When I stopped by I was afraid to get too close because the police station is right next door. I was the only person in the parking lot!

  2. This was on nj.com I think they just republished the press release sent to them from the land lord as a blog. Thats defiantly not what you are taught in journalism class.

  3. What did the store look like as a Genuardi's? Was it remodeled to Lifestyle?

    1. I can't remember the decor package, but I remember it was smaller than your average supermarket. It had sky-high prices and was nothing special. There had also been an A&P in town that was the same. Barnegat residents were compelled to just go to Wawa or a pharmacy when they needed one thing. Then they mostly would drive to Shoprite either in Manahawkin or Waretown for larger purchases. I'm pretty sure Acme will now clear up that problem, and it'll be the only supermarket in town. The location is very central, too.

  4. Jewel-Osco recently opened in a former Dominick's location that sat empty since that chain shut down in 2013. Makes me wonder how many former Genuardi's and Dominick's will be resurrected as Acmes and Jewels.

    1. Probably not too many with regards to Genuardi's. There is a list online of the stores that Safeway still owns, but several have been taken over by independent/specialty markets (for example, the former store in Egg Harbor Township is now 'JR's Fresh Market' (supplied by Thriftway/Shop n Bag) and is still using everything leftover from Genuardi's inside).
There are a couple of empty ones still in PA, but they are located in areas where Acme has bailed from in the past 10 years.

  5. Yeah the former Royersford Genuardi's still sits empty. However, that sits only a few miles from the former Limerick Acme (which is still empty). Both beautiful stores, both empty. The old Genuardi's sits close to a small Giant. I never understood why so many people flock to Giant. Is it the low grade gas they offer discounts on? Maybe people enjoy the terrible customer service? Both of these stores are located in a higher income area, I find it hard to believe the Acme today couldn't come in and steal some thunder back!

    1. This is going off topic, but I agree that Giant has gone way downhill. They no longer feel like a 'local Pennsylvania company', but just another generic chain. The staffing is made up of 90% high school kids who don't really care (and who would for the low pay they offer), their pricing is no longer that great (and with gas being cheap now, gas points are sort of irrelevant for the time being), and a lot of their once fresh-in store offerings now come in pre-packaged. (I picked up a hoagie a few months ago and noticed the packaging changed...it was made in California and shipped to the store..yuck.). I might as well grocery shop at Walmart because the experience would be about equal. The problem is, they are now the only game in town in many smaller communities, so they are still popular based on the convenience factor.

  6. Way too expensive, went shopping and left with about only three items from my shopping list, many of the grocery items are marked up by 50% compared to shop rite and Walmart. I'll be traveling like I used to. Not surprised. They have no competition and are taking advantage of that fact

  7. It's like shopping in Genuardi's you can actually compare prices to Genuardi's because they're still Genuardi's price labels stuck on the shelves in the frozen food department. I hope they clean the meat department deli department in produce department better
