One thing I haven't seen in any reviews of Acme is the Frosted Mug Café. Some stores just look like they've just added a beer department (standard in many supermarkets) with some seating thrown in, but some have taps. Since I assume it's not self-serve, do they have someone serving beer? I've thought that stores that sell beer and wine by the glass are rather cool in and of themselves...
So in the Haggen bankruptcy drama (there's some reports that the chain will go under entirely), there's reports that Albertsons is bidding on the very stores they were forced to divest!
Apparently, that would create a virtual monopoly in a few markets, though that sort of thing didn't seem to create a problem when Albertsons sold most of its Florida stores to Publix, creating situations where there were two stores directly across the street from each other.
It seems suspicious, regarding the Haggen lawsuit and all, but helping Albertsons in that litigation is the fact that Haggen already shot itself in the foot...see, Haggen is owned by private equity firms, too, and to finance their massive acquisition, they took the stores that Safeway and Albertsons actually had owned and stripped them of real estate.
Of course, Albertsons is the lowball bidder, so there's always a chance that another competitor like Kroger (or, in a more wilder idea, if Ahold wanted in on the southwest market). Personally, I'd prefer that Albertsons keep its nose out of the whole affair (unless it wants to trade stores), and start actually building/improving its existing markets in less saturated areas...
What is ACME's highest volume store? How much weekly business does it do? They missed the bid on Mt Kisco NY A&P which was their "crown jewel" 9 million a year profit!!! Ahold outbid Albertsons for this store.

There are also other posts that may or may not have been taken from other retail-history blogs or websites. The Washington Township Foodtown opened and about 1/3 of the shelves were empty when I stopped in over the weekend. The store currently has the A&P 90's decor. At the exit there is a sign saying "Coming in 2016" with a picture of what the store will look like after a major renovation. It's going to mirror the North Haledon Foodtown which is one of the nicest Foodtown's I've ever been in. While it's great having Acme back in North Jersey, I am also happy seeing Foodtown back in the local area.
Big but not necessarily surprising news: SuperFresh is gone! I know Wynnewood and Gladwyne shut down on the 17th, but I'm not sure if the rest of the stores closed with them. Today, their store locator is coming up with no matches. I'm a little bit surprised that Food Basics outlived them. As of today, there are 3 of them left. Food Emporium is down to 2.

DeleteUncle Giuseppe's Marketplace is taking over the Ramsey Pathmark. They have several stores on Long Island and this will be their first NJ location.
