NJ.com has an incredible slideshow with photos of old supermarkets in New Jersey. A couple of Acmes are in the mix, but for me, the classic A&Ps really steal the show. There is also some photos of Grand Unions which are a real treat since there aren't a whole lot to find on the rest of the internet. The slideshow has been mentioned in the comments section of the
January Discussions post but I'm just now giving it its own post so no one misses out. To view the slideshow, please click
here (the photo above is just a screen grab). And believe it or not, they have a
another slideshow of vintage supermarkets, which you can view by clicking
here. Not quite as interesting as the first but pretty good nonetheless. Enjoy!
The point pleasant Acme/Foodtown was the highlight for me.
ReplyDeleteSince this confirms that the Foodtown used to be an Acme, does that mean that we can feature it here? I would imagine that it might be the oldest Acme building still used as a Supermarket.
We certainly can if someone wants to get pictures of it. I won't personally be making a trip to this location.
DeleteSo, the current Stop & Shop which was once a Foodtown was previously an Acme? Was this before Acme opened in its most recent PPB location?
DeleteNice pic of the South Paterson A&P, guessing it wasn't long for that location if it was taken in '77 because I was born six years later and any trip I remember taking to the store there was to the new building they constructed in the 80s, where Food Basics has been for the last thirteen years. Can't pinpoint the year when that went outta there but if I remember, they used the old store (or part of it) as a standalone liquor store for a few years.
ReplyDeleteNo trace of A&P even being there anymore...the building is now Paterson BOE headquarters.
Very fond memories of the ShopRite center at the corner of Mt. Pleasant Ave. (Rte. 10) and S. Livingston Ave. I don’t remember shopping there much - by my time Village Supermarkets had the larger ShopRite down S. Livingston Ave, as well as the West Caldwell Japanese-style ShopRIte. But I saw many a movie at the Colony Theatre which you can see at the right of the photo (looks like they were showing 101 Dalmatians at the time).afterwards hanging out at Silverman’s Stationery for candy and comics. And my family frequented the Canton Low restaurant at the left side of the center and later Eppes Essen when it moved behind the theatre.
