Former Hillsborough A&P!

Location: 626 Route 206, Hillsborough, NJ

This former A&P still has some old decor up on it's walls! Andrew7239 tipped us off to this in his comment under last week's post about Weis coming to Hillsborough. The A&P was located directly across Route 206 from the ShopRite and Stop&Shop. About a third of the A&P building is taken up by a farmers market and the other two thirds by a liquor store. The farm markets section is where the decor remains. There are no remnants of the former supermarket in the liquor store. Just so happens the farmers market set there produce section up in the same exact spot as the A&P.

There may have been another department sign here. I didn't think to look closely for a lablescar when I was in the store. It looks as though the fruit collection may have been added by the farmers market.

No decor along the rear wall. I think the A&P may have extended further back with another section of the wall decor extending back from the department sign.

Look closely and you can see the lablescar... "cold cuts".

Looking towards the front.

Awesome former A&P. Thanks to Andrew7239 for the tip!

  1. Thank you for this post. I'm surprised nobody has commented on it yet.

After viewing historic aerial images, it appears that the ugly metal blue roof was not present back when this store was still an A&P.

This may be my favorite 70's A&P prototype; the stores in Atlantic Highlands and Califon also look like this.

There is some sad A&P news to report: the Pluckemin Centennial is holding its going out of business sale and is scheduled to close on February 23.

    1. Thanks for the tip on the Pluckemin store. I knew it was due to close but had no idea when. I'll be getting it covered for a Bonus Store post.

  2. Having shopped in this store as a child in the 1980s, I WANT to say the wood sign with fruit was the Meat department of the store. Granted, it's been a good 25-30 years since I've been in this particular A&P building. Once Shoprite opened in Nelson's corner, my parents began to shop there.

I do remember the roof was a layered brown shingled material.

It's a SHAME to see all my childhood memories going out of business. Scrumpy's, Charlie Brown's and now A&P are all gone.

  3. The former A&P in Vernon, NJ had this decor before the renovation/expansion in 2001. The store is now ACME.
